Texas Women and World War II
Tour Overview
Step into the 1940s to explore the incredible story of how women pilots in Texas made it possible for the United States to win World War II and reshape the modern world.
Dr. Andrew Torget will lead us on chartered bus tour to Sweetwater, Texas, to visit the only all-women airfield of World War II – Avenger Field – where the Women Airforce Service Pilots (affectionately known as the "WASPS") trained for service. The tour begins the moment we step onto the bus, as Dr. Torget sets the scene during the early 1940s, when Texas transformed into the world’s largest military training ground in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor. Passing through northern Fort Worth on our way to Sweetwater, Dr. Torget will tell stories of how Texas built the largest military airplane plant in the world (where men and women from Fort Worth built B-24s) and Carswell Airforce Base (where crews mastered B-24s before flying them to war in Europe and the Pacific) as we pass those very sites.
Along the way, we will explore the turbulent early days of American aviation and how a desperate U.S. government began an experimental program in west Texas to train women pilots for the war effort.
In Sweetwater, we will be treated to a private catered lunch at the National WASP museum, tour the museum’s amazing holdings, and explore a 1940s hanger showcasing original aircraft flown by the WASPs during World War II. We will also go down to Avenger Field itself, as we explore the lives and training of these remarkable women.
On the way back to Denton, Dr. Torget will entertain us with stories about the legacy of the WASPs and how these women fought for – and eventually achieved -- recognition for their vital wartime service.
